I get asked many questions about which painting should be hung at home. My answer is why commit to one painting, when you can give a platform to several works of art that you like?

Be curators of your own private gallery. You will create a wall with several paintings that will connect to one unit. This way you can give your artistic statement in several options and by several works.

Plan the display

It is best to plan the display. Measure the area above the couch. It is important to keep the same intervals between drawing. Hang the center of the paintings at eye level. Keep a space between the sofa and the painting so that it is not too close to the sofa itself.

How to design a gallery wall with paintings in a variety of sizes?

Keep an even line between the couch and the paintings closest to the couch. There should be one straight line to balance the asymmetrical hanging. As in the example below.

Start with the painting puzzle after you have established the ground with a solid line at the bottom of the puzzle. As mentioned, keep the same distance between paintings to maintain uniformity, because even in chaos it is good to have a certain order. Otherwise, the wall will look sloppy and unpleasant to look at.

And remember, the master of art is to stand out. Give it the place it is deserves and it is should be in the center of the living room. Please, buy an original painting. The prices of the small paintings are usually suitable for every pocket. In my online gallery, the minimum size for a painting is 20 x 20 cm. For smaller paintings, contact me in a message and I will make sure to prepare in the size you request.

An option that I like and that exists in my living room is a long shelf above the sofa and on the shelf I have placed paintings that interest me now, so that if I am exposed to a new painting and want to place it in the living room, I can move or replace the existing ones without driving new nails into the wall. In this case, you should choose small drawings and no larger than A3 size, and light in weight such as drawings printed on paper with a plastic frame and plastic coating.

Color palette of the paintings

I don't agree with the approach that encourages choosing harmonious paintings for the living room design. In my opinion, and happily there are home designers who agree with me. If you have already invested a lot of money for an original painting, then choose a painting with striking colors. The harmonious paintings will be swallowed up in the space of the house and will not receive the proper treatment of the original art.

In the case of designing a gallery wall in a bedroom, I would choose the harmonious colors, because the room is a rest room, and there should be no additional visual disturbances.

And what should be hung in a study room?

Since the corona virus, many of us have moved to work from home, and for this purpose have created a work corner or turned an entire room into an office. In the case of a small workspace, you should choose a painting that conveys your ideology. For example, a painted portrait of a famous personality that you identify with the messages that the character represents. It could be Frida Kahlo associated with the feminist message, or an illustrated portrait of Freddie Mercury, a popular singer, to break the ice with your customers.

It is important that the painting hanging behind you in the work corner evokes identification and empathy with the clients who are in the office or in the Zoom meetings.

And what should be hung in front of the work area?

For support and encouragement, you should hang the illustrated portraits of the children, grandchildren, and parents. That way, in difficult moments you can look up to them and cheer up.
